What is physie?Fun, upbeat, pop music is the soundtrack to a sport that fuses dance styles such as jazz, ballet, hip hop, contemporary, aerobic dance and even yoga! Our innovative choreography changes annually and is designed for maximum variety and fun. Physie (also known as Physical Culture) is the perfect combination of movements designed to increase strength, fitness and flexibility. The benefits are increased co-ordination, brain development and confidence. Physie is both an individual and synchronised, team-based sport for all ages that’s social and fun and an excellent low impact dance and aerobic activity. With over 10,000 members around Australia, BJP Physie is Australia’s longest running and premier Physie organisation. Founded over 131 years ago as the Bjelke-Petersen School of Physical Culture, BJP has proudly inspired generations of Australian girls and women to exercise both body and mind through this remarkable sport.

How much do classes cost?Designed with Australian families in mind, classes start from just $6 a week with an annual registration of only $99. With no expensive costumes or recital fees, Physie is an affordable way to learn to dance and keep fit with a touch of glamour and a lot of fun! We hold fundraising efforts throughout the year to help pay for performance wear worn at team competitions.

What should I wear to class?'Training blacks' are compulsory across all junior and senior classes, for example, a simple black leotard or black fitted top with a pair of black shorts or black tights of any length. Girls should wear fitted clothing to class, allowing teachers to check correct posture and avoid incorrect technique or injury. Hair must be tied back off the face and neck for all classes. Ladies can wear comfortable clothing of their choice. Many of our ladies wear tights and tops, or exercise pants. Our Tiny Tots are encouraged to wear anything they can move in! A leotard, shorts or even a princess skirt! No dance shoes or sneakers are required.

Can parents watch their daughter's classes? We encourage parents to watch classes. We find when parents watch classes they are better able to help their children practice corrections at home and prepare for competition. However, it is not compulsory to stay and watch your child's lesson. You can sit outside the studio or drop your child off and collect them at the end of class. We do ask you come into the studio and escort children to and from the carpark to ensure their safety.

Where are classes held? Our core classes are held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays with a variety of additional classes e.g. for special events like our performance at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Classes are primarily held at The North Shore Gym, 10-12 West Street, Pymble as well as Gordon Baptist Church.

Where are competitions held, and do I have to compete?Physie is a competitive sport and North Shore Physie encourages all members to challenge themselves by entering one, some, or all annual competitions. The Physie season culminates in a series of competitions for both teams and individuals from July/August through to early December. While individual competitions are not compulsory, we do ask members to join and compete on Team Day held at Sydney Olympic Park. Competitions foster club spirit, give members a goal to work towards and a sense of belonging. The process of learning, perfecting and performing a new syllabus each year encourages you to stand tall with strength, pride, confidence and self-assurance. Team competitions also teach important life lessons, such as supportive behaviour, fostering a commitment to others and teaching girls to be team players. Competitions are held in and around Sydney and we occasionally organise a fun weekend away for an interstate or regional competition. Our Physie season ends with BJP's Champion Girl National Finals held at the Sydney Opera House.
